Asbestos and Mesothelioma in Mississippi
Once a common material in everything from building and pipe insulation to costume jewelry, asbestos is now best known as a highly toxic substance. Inhalation of asbestos fibers can lead to Mesothelioma, and it is considered a carcinogen in other types of cancers including lung cancer, adenoid carcinoma, cancer of the throat, stomach, larynx, kidney, esophageal cancer, and some forms of lymphatic cancer. The science is still evolving. What is not as well known is that asbestos related cancers can develop as many as 10 to 60 years after exposure to the substance. This means that even if someone was exposed to asbestos in the 1950’s or 1960’s, they may yet be diagnosed with an asbestos related disease.
Dangers of Asbestos Exposure
As workers or families of workers know all too well, a diagnosis of cancer or Mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure is an unfortunate, irreversible, and preventable condition.
As early as the 1920’s, many companies were aware, or could have been aware, of the dangers asbestos presented. However, because of its low cost and versatility, they continued to use it in a number of products and applications. In some cases, it was used until the 1970’s and 1980s, until such products were banned by law. In some companies, workers may have received inadequate warnings about asbestos hazards; however, the true dangers may not have been fully disclosed. In addition, the amount of exposure considered “safe” is not known. Even small amounts of exposure have been linked to Mesothelioma.
