Mississippi Vioxx Litigation Lawyers

Vioxx Recalled Due to Dangerous Side Effects

Vioxx is manufactured by Merck & Co, and was released to the public to treat arthritis related pain and stiffness in May 1999. A non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory prescription drug, the product was shown in clinical and post-marketing studies to carry an increased risk of adverse side effects related to hypertension. Despite the negative indications, Merck began actively selling and marketing Vioxx. Physicians prescribed Vioxx more than 100 million times prior to it’s being removed from the market.

Heart Attack, Stroke and Health Risks of Vioxx

As reports and evidence of the risk of strokes and heart attacks with use of Vioxx surfaced, Merck faced pressure by the FDA, who authored a warning letter in 2001 expressing concern about the company’s misrepresentation of the drug’s safety. In 2002, Merck amended the Vioxx label to include an association between use of the medication and heart attack and strokes. However, it wasn’t until 2004 that Merck removed the drug from the market in response to mounting evidence of serious health risks in patients taking Vioxx. A final study by the Food and Drug Administration determined that patients taking Vioxx faced a 50% greater likelihood to suffer heart attacks and sudden death as compared to a similar medication, Celebrex.
